What is a Mojito Mocktail made of?
- 2-3 sprigs of mint, chopped
- zest of 1 lime
- juice of 1 lime
- 2 cans of fruit flavored kidney friendly seltzer (with no phosphate or potassium additives) like Spindrift, La Croix, or Waterloo. I recommend raspberry or mango flavored seltzer to make for a perfect summer time drink!
How to mix a Mojito Mocktail?
- Muddle the mint leaves with a pestle and mortar.
- Place a handful of ice into two glasses, split the lime juice and zest between the two and mix.
- Top with 1 can of your favorite raspberry flavored kidney-friendly seltzer into each glass.
- Add an additional mint leaf on top for garnish!
What makes this Mocktail kidney-friendly?
Seltzers like, Spindrift, La Croix and Waterloo, are lower in sugar which can be helpful for those with chronic kidney disease. This can help better control blood sugars with CKD. I always recommend checking for phosphate and potassium additives in flavored waters as well since they can be abundant there. Look for ingredients with the words “potassium” or “phos” in them. If you need a potassium or phosphorus restriction, this can be helpful.
